Coffee Pods & Capsules We Can Get Behind!

Posted by Coffee Curator on 1st Apr 2021

Coffee Pods or Capsules are a divisive product when spoken about in the coffee industry.

They have been in the market since the early 90’s but exploded in the early 00’s largely driven by market leader Nespresso & the world over was quickly realising that these simply to use little plastic pods could make a decent cup of coffee!

Now we are a strong believer in giving as many people as possible access to amazing coffee but this boom we saw coffee become ever more ingrained in people's lives and routines with a simple press of a button the quality of fast coffee had never been better! But with this comes consequences no matter how cheap, accessible or delicious a traditional coffee pod or capsule is there are unseen consequences. With traditional coffee Pods & Capsules being largely made up of an aluminium & plastic based material the manufacturing process and then reuse or recycling of the product is not optimal. In some cases it is estimated to take upto 400+ years for a traditional coffee capsule to break down in landfill.

With Australians estimated to be consuming over 3 million coffee capsules a year & global consumption estimated at over 60 million as of 2018 the need to find a more sustainable solution was a must! But fear not the world's first biodegradable and compostable coffee pod was patented by George Gorbatenko in 2011. This along with other innovations has brought us to where we are today.

With coffee roasters of all sizes having access to biodegradable & compostable coffee pod solutions in Australia with companies such as Capsule Pack Australia providing the service for your favourite coffee roasters to get their amazing coffee prepared and packed into a sustainable coffee capsule solution.

Though the access to biodegradable & compostable coffee pods & capsules is getting better the battle isn't won yet. With this, we encourage you to check to see if the Pods or Capsules you are buying are in fact Biodegradable or Compostable? Change is driven by consumers and every purchase is a step towards a more sustainable future.

We are working with all our roasting partners and will be exclusively showcasing and selling only biodegradable & compostable coffee pods & capsules on our platform and are working with some roasters to assist in the conversion from traditional to a more sustainable solution.
